After it being on my crdiet bureau for 8 years collection agencies are bugging my for their money. My credit report is great right now and was wondering if they can destroy it again. I am in the middle of purchasing a new home and I am worried this might affect it? Can they ruin it again for me. Isn`t there a statue of limitations of 7 years?

I have declared bankruptcy back in 1999 and I have a Canada and Newfoundland Student Loans from 1999 which I have been paying to a Collection Agency since May 2007. Since my bankruptcy, I have built up excellent credit ( I have credit cards, and a new car) over the past 5 years. I am trying to buy a home but on my credit bureau rating my student loans show up from 8 years ago, yet I am paying on them through a collection agency but I receive no credit on my credit bureau report. and therefore I have been turned down for a mortgage. I now earn about 70K a year so my income is not an issue. Is there anything I can do to help my chances for a mortgage?

I just wanted to share an encouraging story. My husband I filed joint bankruptcy in October 2006. We were discharged in August 2007. We immediately applied for secure credit cards which we have been using for over a year, and paying off completely. Six months ago, we applied for a loan for a car and were quoted around 20%. We held off, spent the last 6 months continuing to use and pay off our credit cards. We just got approved for a car loan at 13%! Still more than a `normal` person, but that is a 7% difference from even 6 months ago!

So for those who are considering bankruptcy, all is not lost – the future can be bright! And you will get credit again!

Is there somewhere else that I can apply for a secured credit card in case Capital One will not give me one ?

We`ve recently had our bankruptcy discharged and I`m wondering what we should do in the next few years as far as obtaining copies of our credit reports. As a victim of identity theft in the past, I have requested a copy of my credit report from both Equifax and TransUnion every year, to ensure that there was nothing on it that shouldn`t be.

Seeing as our bankruptcy obviously means we will have a difficult time obtaining new credit accounts, is there any reason to continue getting an annual credit report over the next few years? I know there is no harm in getting one, but having already been a victim of identity theft, I am always hesitant to mail copies of my ID to anyone, which is something I have to do every year when I request my credit report (I know I can pay to get it online, but I`d rather save the money on that).

My husband and I filed joint bankruptcy last year and have recently been discharged. We want to start rebuilding our credit as soon as possible and have been looking into the secured credit cards. Since we filed joint bankruptcy, we obviously need to rebuild my credit and his – but we cannot afford the fees needed to secure a credit card in each of our names right now. My husband has the larger income. Should we work on rebuilding his credit first?

Hi, I have been discharged from bankruptcy over two years now. Since then I have been trying to do everything possible to repair my credit, paying all my bills on time and even obtaining a credit card, which I use responsibly. Recently, I received a letter in the mail from a lawyer of one of the creditors involved stating that they want payment plus interest for the amount I charged during the last month before filing, claiming fraudulent usage (article 178). Basically their argument is that by filing for bankruptcy it proves that I knew I was in financial trouble but used the card anyways. This is absolutely untrue as it was the most difficult decision I ever had to make, one that I made with the advice of a credit counsellor who felt it was my only option! During the course of the 9 month period of bankruptcy I did everything I was supposed to
do, and in the end it proved to very costly both financially and emotionally, but I looked towards a brighter future. Recently though, I get this letter and it feels like 3 years ago all over again. If this creditor had any issue over how the card was used in the last month why didn\’t they state their case before my discharge? Why wait all this time and now look for the money plus interest and put this incredible stress back on me? I have talked to my trustee and they say to ignore the letter as a possib do, and in the end it proved to very costly both financially and emotionally, but I looked towards a brighter future. Recently though, I get this letter and it feels like 3 years ago all over again. If this creditor had any issue over how the card was used in the last month why didn\’t they state their case before my discharge? Why wait all this time and now look for the money plus interest and put this incredible stress back on me? I have talked to my trustee and they say to ignore the letter as a possible scare tactic to get me to pay. I just received another call from the lawyer and the trustee is now sending me a letter on what to do if this continues….obviously my mind is far from at ease because I am sending this email. Can you give me any advice here on what I feel is nothing more than unjust harassment? Thanks.

Hi, I am currently in bankruptcy. I owed 30,000 on a credit card to a creditor (Scotia Bank). When I applied for this card I alone signed the paperwork but requested a supplementary card for my wife. She has never signed any paperwork nor had she ever activated the card. Scotiabank never came after her for the money but now have reported her to the credit bureau thus affecting her credit rating. They are unable to prove their claim that she was a co-signer. I have asked for documented proof a number of times with no luck. How can my wife get this mistake fixed?
