I owe about 55,000$ on my line of credit and roughly 25,000$ in credit cards and loans- excluding student loans and mortgage. Just to be up to date with these payments I would need a lump sum of about 7,500$ which I do not have as I already went through all my savings to try to pay off these debts. What would be my best option at this point? Refinance my house, sell the house- which I’m trying to avoid-, negotiate a debt settlement, credit counselling or just consider consumer proposal? I’m really trying to avoid bankruptcy…

I was on a Debt Management Program from Credit Counseling. I owe $50,000 in debts when I first started with the program but then my income change and I could not afford to continue, so I just stopped making payments. By then, I only owed around $25,000 in debts. What will happen to my credit now? Will my creditors start coming after me with full interests? I read on some blogs and posts that the accounts that got delinquent will be erased on the credit bureau after 7 years. Is it true? What can I do now? Please help.

I personally learned quite a few lessons about personal finance and dealing with collections in a very short space of time.

I am confused with one problem. I pulled my credit report from Equifax and there is one credit card debt from march 2007 and it is marked as Written Off – Closed by Credit Grantor. I assume this is beyond the SOL but I still get calls.

Aside from that mark there is nothing else on my report.

However, I am hounded DAILY by three different companies about debts that are not on my report.

How should I go about resolving this?

Need some advice here. Parents have a lot of credit cards with high monthly payments (minimums) required every month. Plus cars, mortgages, insurance etc…One of them is looking for work but not successful yet. Therefore one person is paying for all the bills in the household and things are not working out. What do you recommend? A debt management plan? Consumer proposal? Do they need to contact a credit councillor and do you know of good ones in Ontario? Thanks.

Is using the Credit Counselling Society the same as filing a proposal? I joined with them about 10 months ago, and am starting to have difficulties wth my payments. My common-law husband is not supportive, I was late last month and this month. I owe about $50,000, and am paying $700.00 per month. One of my problems is that I got a secured loan from a finance company, not realizing that the security (a car) is in my husband’s name. Can the finance company seize the car if my payments are late even if the car is not in my name? I would have thought they would have checked into this, but I’m not sure what the rules are.
